Born in Chittagong at the mouth of the Karnafuli River on the auspicious day of Basanti Puja, her life began with an unspoken promise of music and grace.From an early age, Basanti displayed an angelic voice and the rare ability to sing any melody she heard, effortlessly and instinctively.Her uncle and first guru, Sri Sadhan Roy, recognized her talent and nurtured it with care, discipline, and encouragement.

Age 5 onwards | All India Radio – Shishu Mahal

Introduced to All India Radio’s Shishu Mahal at a young age, Basanti Sengupta’s musical journey formally began, marking the start of a lifelong association with radio, where her voice and talent continued to grow, evolve, and inspire listeners over the years.

Teenage Years | Training under Her Father

Under the guidance of her father, Sri Gopal Dasgupta, Basanti Sengupta developed a deep understanding of music and style. She evolved into the finest interpreter of his ragpradhan and adhunik Bengali compositions, rendering them with emotion, precision, and a unique sensitivity that captivated listeners and preserved his musical legacy.

Her audition at All India Radio, Kolkata earned Basanti Sengupta the rare and prestigious B-High grade, a remarkable achievement at a young age. This recognition firmly established her musical stature, highlighting her exceptional talent, refined training, and expressive voice, and opening the path to a respected and enduring musical journey.

Married at the peak of her musical career, Basanti Sengupta embraced family life and its many responsibilities with grace and dedication. Teaching & Contributions

She founded Banitirtha Gopal Dasgupta Academy, nurturing young talents in classical and semi-classical music.
In 1983, she published a comprehensive collection of her father’s compositions, preserving a rich musical legacy.
She also led the Classical Music Department at Children’s Little Theatre (CLT), Kolkata, shaping future generations of artists.

Final Years & Passing

Basanti Sengupta passed away on 1st January 2001 at the age of 63, leaving behind a legacy filled with music, dedication, and resilience. Her life was deeply rooted in melody and teaching, and her unstoppable spirit continues to inspire generations, living on through her songs, students, and cherished memories.
